Direct answer
Yes: in 2026 ChatGPT can generate and, on eligible plans, host a site through ChatGPT Sites. That is not the same as a dependable South African business website. You still need a true brief, checked claims, a domain you control, working forms, local payments if you sell, POPIA-aware data handling, and someone who will maintain the result. Use AI for speed to a prototype; use a human process for anything that must convert, rank or stay up.

The short answer
Reviewed 17 September 2026 by Dsignr Digital, a Rosebank (Gauteng) web design and digital marketing agency founded in 2015 by Sphamandla. We sell websites, ecommerce, branding, SEO, social, email and care plans. These articles describe that work — not an affiliate playbook.
Yes. In 2026 ChatGPT can create, preview, host and publish a website through ChatGPT Sites, and it can also help write code for a site hosted elsewhere. But a generated website is not automatically accurate, distinctive, compliant, easy to find or good at turning visitors into customers.
For a temporary campaign page, internal tool or early prototype, that speed can be genuinely useful. For a public business website, a human still needs to own the brief, check every claim, connect the right domain and services, test the customer journey, protect personal information and decide who will maintain the site.
The sensible question is no longer “Can AI make a website?” It can. The question is whether the result is fit for the job your business expects it to do.
What ChatGPT Sites can do today
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Sites as a public-beta feature for creating, previewing, publishing and sharing interactive websites and lightweight apps. You describe what you need, review a private preview, ask for changes and publish an approved version.
OpenAI’s developer guide says Sites can host persistent outputs and provides separate save and deploy stages. Availability depends on plan, region, rollout and workspace controls, so check the current account requirements rather than assuming every ChatGPT user sees the same option.
That is an important change from earlier versions of ChatGPT, which could generate code but could not provide the full hosted workflow. Older articles that say ChatGPT cannot publish a site at all are now out of date.
There are two different ways to build with ChatGPT
Route one is ChatGPT Sites. ChatGPT creates and hosts the experience within the Sites workflow. It is the quickest route when the feature supports what you need.
Route two is AI-assisted development. ChatGPT helps plan pages, write copy and generate HTML, CSS, JavaScript or application code. A person or development team then tests and deploys that code to separate hosting.
The second route involves more work but gives a capable team greater control over architecture, integrations, source code, performance and hosting. It is closer to Dsignr Digital’s web development process, with AI acting as a tool inside a managed project rather than as the project owner.
Where AI website building is genuinely useful
AI is particularly good at getting rid of the blank page. It can propose a sitemap, turn a rough offer into page sections, generate a first visual direction, create a prototype and produce variations quickly.
It can also help a small team:
- test whether an idea needs a one-page site or a larger content structure;
- draft frequently asked questions from real customer conversations;
- prototype a calculator, directory or internal dashboard;
- translate a design into starter code;
- identify missing content before a professional build begins.
These are meaningful savings. The mistake is treating a fast first version as a finished business system. Speed to preview and readiness for customers are not the same milestone.
What the business owner still has to decide
ChatGPT does not know your customers simply because it has your company name. It needs a clear brief: the audience, problem, offer, proof, tone, required actions and information that must not be invented.
A human must verify prices, service areas, qualifications, warranties, testimonials and legal claims. Someone must choose the primary call to action, make sure forms reach the right inbox and decide what happens after a lead arrives. If the website takes payments or bookings, the failure paths matter as much as the ideal demonstration.
There is also brand judgement. AI can produce a polished page that looks like thousands of other polished pages. Distinctive work comes from real customer insight, original photography, a coherent identity and decisions that reflect the business rather than the average of the internet.
The South African business checklist
Before using an AI-generated site publicly in South Africa, check the local details that generic prompts often miss:
- Contact and location: use the correct South African address, telephone format, operating hours and service area everywhere.
- Mobile reality: test on a real phone and a slower connection, not only in a desktop preview.
- Payments: confirm the required gateway and payment methods. Payfast documents official integrations for Shopify and WooCommerce.
- Privacy: explain what contact, booking and newsletter forms collect and why.
- Ownership: document the domain, hosting, source code, data exports and account administrators.
- Support: decide who fixes a broken form, failed deployment or security problem after launch.
For an online store, compare the platform and local constraints in Dsignr Digital’s Shopify, WooCommerce and local platforms guide.
AI does not take responsibility for POPIA or security
When your website collects a name, email address, telephone number or order details, your business remains responsible for how that information is processed. Section 18 of the Protection of Personal Information Act sets out information that a responsible party should communicate when collecting personal information. POPIA also requires appropriate, reasonable safeguards.
That means checking where form submissions and customer data are stored, who can access them, which third parties receive them and how a person can exercise their rights. Do not paste confidential customer data, credentials or unpublished business information into a tool unless your organisation has approved that use.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites terms say the site owner is the controller of visitor data and that Sites must not process payment-card data or protected health information. Any ecommerce payment flow therefore needs an appropriate third-party payment provider, as well as a review of that provider’s own security and compliance requirements.
Generated code also needs review. Authentication, permissions, file uploads, payment callbacks and database rules are security-sensitive. A page that renders without an error is not evidence that the application is secure.
Will an AI-built website rank on Google?
It can rank, but the fact that AI built it provides no ranking advantage. Google’s guidance for AI features says the same foundational SEO practices apply: allow crawling, make content discoverable through internal links, provide a good page experience and keep important information in text.
Google also says there are no additional technical requirements for appearing as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to appear in ordinary Search with a snippet. Structured data should match the visible page; it is not a shortcut that makes weak content authoritative.
Before launch, confirm that the site has crawlable navigation, unique page titles, descriptive headings, canonical URLs, a sitemap, useful service content and accurate business information. Then connect Search Console and measure what is actually indexed. Dsignr Digital’s SEO service covers the technical and content work beyond a generated layout.
When an AI-built site is enough—and when it is not
An AI-built site can be a sensible choice for an event page, private prototype, temporary information hub or a new idea that needs validation before major investment. Keep the scope narrow, avoid sensitive data and make sure somebody can support it.
Bring in experienced design or development help when the website:
- is a major source of revenue or qualified leads;
- must carry a distinctive, high-trust brand;
- takes payments, stores customer data or manages user accounts;
- connects to stock, CRM, finance, booking or other business systems;
- needs accessible, multilingual or complex content;
- must migrate an existing site without losing search visibility.
The middle ground often works best: use AI to accelerate research and prototyping, then use human expertise for the decisions, testing and accountability that matter.
30-minute AI draft versus agency handover
| Job | ChatGPT in half an hour | What a handover still needs |
|---|---|---|
| Sitemap and first copy | Often good enough to react to | Facts, tone, legal claims, original proof |
| Look and layout | Generic but presentable | Identity, photography, accessible components |
| Domain and DNS | Easy to skip or lock to a host you do not own | Registrar login in the business’s name |
| Forms and WhatsApp | May look finished | Delivered to the right inbox, spam-tested, POPIA notice |
| SEO and AI search | Placeholder titles | Unique URLs, metadata, sitemap, Search Console |
| Payments | Must not take cards inside ChatGPT Sites | Official PayFast (or similar) on a real checkout |
Treat the left column as a workshop. Treat the right column as go-live. Dsignr Digital’s web design and web development work sits on the right-hand side, with AI used inside the project when it helps.
A 15-minute test before you publish
- Read every sentence aloud and remove claims you cannot prove.
- Open the site on two real phones and complete the primary action.
- Submit every form and confirm the message reaches the correct person.
- Check the business name, Rosebank address, telephone number and hours.
- Run key pages through PageSpeed Insights and fix obvious media problems.
- Check page titles, headings, links and whether text is selectable and crawlable.
- Review the privacy notice and every third party receiving personal information.
- Record who owns the domain, deployment, data and recovery process.
If the site is already live and you are unsure what the generator missed, ask Dsignr Digital for a website review. A short audit is cheaper than discovering a broken lead path after a campaign starts.
How we apply this at Dsignr Digital
We use AI inside managed projects — research, first-draft copy, prototyping — on WordPress, Shopify and Craft. We do not hand a client a ChatGPT Site as their production marketing engine. Go-live still means a domain they own, forms that arrive, POPIA-aware notices, and, if they sell, an official payment integration.
The 15-minute test in this article is the same pass we run before we will put our name on a launch. If you already published an AI layout, we can audit it; that is web development and web design, not a prompt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT actually create and publish a website in 2026?
Yes. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites public beta can create, preview, host and publish websites and lightweight apps. Availability depends on the user’s plan, region, rollout and workspace settings.
Can ChatGPT build a website for free?
ChatGPT can help free users plan content or generate code within their available limits, but OpenAI’s current documentation says Sites availability depends on eligible paid plans and rollout. A public business site may also require a domain, integrations and ongoing support.
Can I connect my own domain to a ChatGPT Site?
Capabilities and workspace controls are changing during the public beta. Check OpenAI’s current Sites documentation for your plan before promising a custom-domain launch, and retain control of the domain account regardless of the deployment route.
Can ChatGPT build an ecommerce website?
It can prototype storefronts and generate application code, but a production store requires reliable products, payments, tax, delivery, order messages, security and support. OpenAI says Sites must not process payment-card data, so use an appropriate third-party provider and confirm the complete South African checkout journey.
Will a ChatGPT-built website be good for SEO?
Not automatically. It still needs crawlable pages, useful original content, internal links, accurate metadata, good performance and indexing. Google says ordinary SEO fundamentals apply to both traditional Search and its AI features.
Who owns content and code generated with ChatGPT?
Ownership and usage depend on OpenAI’s current terms, your plan, third-party assets and the deployment arrangement. Review those terms and document who controls the domain, source files, hosting, data and paid licences before launch.
Is an AI-generated website POPIA compliant?
No tool makes a site compliant by default. The South African business remains responsible for lawful processing, notices, safeguards, third parties and data-subject rights. Review the actual data flows rather than relying on a generated privacy-policy template.
When should I hire a web designer instead of using AI alone?
Hire experienced help when the site is commercially important, needs a distinctive brand, handles payments or personal information, connects to business systems, requires accessibility or must preserve rankings during a migration.
Can a professional agency still use AI?
Yes. AI can accelerate research, prototyping, content organisation and development. The value of the agency is in customer insight, judgement, original design, technical review, testing and accountability—not in avoiding useful tools.
