Heritage Day Marketing Without Tokenism: A Practical Guide for South African Brands

Heritage Day falls on 24 September. For 2026, the official national theme is “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us”. According to SAnews, the national celebration will be held at King Zwelithini Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal in partnership with the Zulu Kingdom and Royal House. It will be combined with uMkhosi weLembe.

The theme recognises the cultures, languages, traditions and histories shaping South Africa’s national identity. For marketers, the important word is living. Heritage is not a collection of costumes, foods or archive images brought out for one calendar post. It is carried, interpreted and changed by people.

A credible campaign should therefore begin with the communities, employees, customers and places connected to the brand—not with a stock image and a flag-coloured border.

Tokenism happens when a culture or community is used mainly to make a brand appear inclusive, without meaningful involvement, context or benefit. It may look celebratory on the surface while reducing people to visual symbols.

Warning signs include using traditional clothing as decoration, treating distinct cultures as interchangeable, asking one employee to represent an entire language group, or publishing a generic “rainbow nation” message while the organisation’s everyday conduct tells a different story. A sales promotion with no relationship to Heritage Day can also feel opportunistic.

This does not mean brands must remain silent. It means the idea should earn its place. Ask why your organisation is speaking, whose story is being told, who helped shape it and what remains after the post disappears.

A practical planning framework is LISTEN:

• Link the idea to a genuine relationship, place, product, team or history.
• Invite relevant people into planning before the concept is fixed.
• Source names, facts, language, images and cultural details carefully.
• Transfer value through payment, credit, exposure on agreed terms, procurement or community support.
• Explain enough context for audiences to understand the story.
• Notice feedback, possible harm and lessons for future work.

The framework is intentionally broader than a creative review. A campaign can be visually beautiful and still be extractive. Use LISTEN during the brief, supplier selection, production, approval and post-campaign review. If the team cannot identify the relationship or transferred value, reconsider whether the brand should lead the story at all.

Start with material your organisation can discuss honestly. A Johannesburg manufacturer might document the craft knowledge behind a process. A family business could preserve its founding story through an interview across generations. A retailer could profile South African makers whose products it already stocks, with their consent and direct links to their work.

Useful formats include a short documentary, an employee-led oral-history series, a local-language explainer, an illustrated timeline checked by a historian, or a practical guide to nearby heritage institutions. A business can also open its platform to a cultural practitioner who controls the subject and is paid for the work.

Keep the brand’s role proportionate. Sometimes the strongest execution is to facilitate, fund and credit rather than dominate. Connect the campaign to your established brand identity without forcing every contributor into an inflexible corporate voice.

Avoid collapsing South Africa’s diversity into one visual language. Do not mix clothing, greetings, music or symbols from unrelated communities simply because they appear colourful. Avoid unverified historical claims, sacred or ceremonial imagery used without permission, caricatured accents and machine translations published without a fluent reviewer.

Be careful with workplace dress-up requests. Employees should not feel pressured to perform culture or explain personal identity for content. Never assume that a colleague who belongs to a community is available as an unpaid cultural consultant.

Also question discount-led slogans such as “heritage sale” when the connection is merely the date. If a commercial offer is appropriate, explain its relevance and consider how value flows to South African suppliers, creatives or community organisations. Do not use public participation as permission to repurpose people’s images indefinitely.

Consultation should happen while the idea can still change. Identify people with relevant lived or professional knowledge, explain the campaign and ask what respectful participation looks like to them. This could include cultural organisations, local historians, language practitioners, artists, employee groups or community leaders.

Agree on payment, credit, image rights, editing input and where the work will appear. Consent to an interview is not automatically consent to paid advertising, media distribution or permanent reuse. Put the agreed terms in writing and provide participants with a contact person.

Community benefit need not be a once-off donation announced for publicity. Longer-lasting options include commissioning local creatives, sourcing from small suppliers, funding preservation or education, offering skills, or creating an ongoing partnership. The relationship should not begin and end in September.

South Africa has 12 official languages, including South African Sign Language. The South African Government’s account of the 2023 constitutional amendment explains the significance of recognising SASL as an official language.

You do not have to squeeze 12 translations into every graphic. Choose languages according to the audience, location and contributors, then use qualified translators or fluent reviewers. Preserve names, diacritics and meaning. Translation should be budgeted and scheduled, not added minutes before publication.

Accessibility is part of respectful communication. Add useful alt text to images, accurate captions and transcripts to video, readable contrast and plain-language supporting copy. CamelCase makes hashtags easier to parse. The W3C overview of WCAG provides the recognised framework for perceivable, operable, understandable and robust digital content. Captions in a spoken language do not replace SASL interpretation where SASL access is required.

Normal brand and legal approval may not identify cultural mistakes. Add a contextual review by someone with relevant knowledge and enough authority to challenge the concept. One person should not be treated as the final representative of a whole community; use more than one perspective where the subject is sensitive or contested.

Your approval pack should include final copy, translations, imagery, alt text, captions, credits, landing pages, paid-media variants and the intended audience targeting. Review the complete execution rather than approving the headline in isolation.

Confirm permissions, licence periods and claims. Prepare a response path for corrections: who monitors comments, who can pause paid media and who approves an amendment or apology? An honest correction is usually better than defensiveness. Build enough time into the schedule so reviewers are not pressured to approve overnight.

Choose measures that reflect the campaign’s purpose. Awareness work may track qualified reach, video completion, saves, shares and traffic to educational or partner resources. Community-centred work should also record supplier spend, paid commissions, partner referrals, participation and whether agreed benefits were delivered.

Review the quality of responses, not only volume. Relevant questions, personal stories and constructive discussion can be more meaningful than generic reactions. Track complaints, corrections, hidden comments and negative sentiment without dismissing criticism as poor performance.

Afterwards, ask contributors and partners for feedback separately from the public metrics. Did they feel represented accurately? Were approvals and payments handled properly? Would they participate again? Document lessons for the next brief. Do not turn private demographic or cultural information into a reporting asset without a clear purpose, consent and suitable protection.

Before scheduling the campaign, confirm:

• The idea has a genuine connection to the brand and the 2026 context.
• Relevant people were involved early enough to influence it.
• Contributors gave informed consent and agreed to payment, credit and usage.
• Historical and cultural claims have reliable sources.
• Names, clothing, music, symbols and locations are represented accurately.
• Translations were reviewed by fluent humans.
• Images have alt text and videos have accurate captions or transcripts.
• The work does not ask employees to perform or disclose identity.
• Commercial messaging does not overpower the people or purpose.
• Partner tags, links and credits work correctly.
• Paid-media targeting and reuse match the permissions obtained.
• A named person can respond, correct or pause the campaign.
• The team knows what community value and campaign outcomes will be measured.

If several answers are uncertain on 23 September, postponing or simplifying the post is safer than publishing an avoidable mistake.

Heritage Day is not a creative theme to borrow for 24 hours. It is an opportunity to show how a brand listens, represents people and shares value. Start with a defensible relationship, involve the right voices and make the final content accessible.
