Direct answer
Dark social is traffic from private shares (WhatsApp, iMessage, email, SMS) that analytics often records as Direct. You will not measure 100% of it. You can reduce the blind spot with unique UTM links, a tracked WhatsApp click, and treating suspiciously high Direct on campaign days as private share rather than typed URLs.

What dark social is (and is not)

Last updated: September 2026. Dark social is not a threat actor. It is content passed in private channels: WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, email, SMS. Those clicks often arrive without a useful HTTP referrer, so GA4 files them as Direct.
An older version of this article cited “84% of shared content” without a source we can still defend. Do not use that figure. In South Africa, WhatsApp is simply how colleagues and customers pass links. Treat Direct + WhatsApp clicks as a cluster, not as people typing your full URL.
A measurement method you can actually run
- Give every campaign its own URL. Use UTM parameters (
utm_source=whatsapp,utm_medium=social,utm_campaign=…) on the link you paste into broadcasts and bios. - Put a tracked WhatsApp control on the site. A
wa.meor click-to-chat link with a unique query string can fire a GA4 event. That is outbound intent, not inbound dark social, but it shows whether WhatsApp is part of the journey. - Shorten only if you keep the parameters. A short link that strips UTMs sends you back to Direct.
- Read Direct with context. A spike in Direct the hour you send a WhatsApp broadcast is probably the broadcast. A spike with no send is more likely bookmarks, app in-app browsers, or a broken tag.
- Do not call Direct “brand demand” by default. On mobile, in-app browsers and prefetching inflate Direct.
Google’s GA4 traffic-source documentation is the reference for how sessions are classified. UTMs you control still override a missing referrer when the landing URL includes them.
Make the shareable link the tracked one
Place share actions that copy a UTM URL, not only the naked permalink. On article templates, a “Share on WhatsApp” button should include campaign parameters for that article. Native OS share sheets will still leak untagged copies; that is expected.
For email newsletters, unique links per send are more useful than a generic homepage. Marketing lists still need lawful consent under POPIA; a customer forwarding a page is a different act from you adding them to a broadcast.
How to report it to a client without pretending precision
Report three numbers: tagged campaign landings, WhatsApp click events, and Direct sessions on the same days. Say clearly that private forwards are under-counted. That is more honest than a fake completeness percentage.
If you need shareable pages that are worth forwarding, start with useful service URLs and articles, not a Linktree. See why you need a real website.

How we apply this at Dsignr Digital
South African clients still close work on WhatsApp. In social media marketing and on the websites we ship, we treat WhatsApp as a closer on a real URL, with a tracked click where it is appropriate, and UTMs on broadcasts. We do not report a fake “dark social percentage” in decks.
If Direct spikes the hour a broadcast goes out, we say so. If it does not, we look for broken tags before we celebrate brand demand.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is dark social?
Private sharing of links through apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS and email, where analytics often cannot see the referrer and records Direct traffic instead.
How much traffic is dark social?
There is no single percentage that applies to every site. In South Africa, WhatsApp forwarding is common. Measure tagged campaigns and treat unexplained Direct spikes around those sends as likely private share.
Does WhatsApp show up in Google Analytics?
Only if the landing URL includes parameters you added, or you track outbound WhatsApp clicks as events. Untagged wa.me forwards usually look like Direct.
Should I add UTM codes to every URL?
Add them to links you distribute: ads, email, WhatsApp broadcasts, PDFs, QR codes. Do not UTM your own internal menu links; that pollutes session source.
Are short URLs better for WhatsApp?
They are easier to paste if they preserve campaign parameters and redirect to HTTPS. A shortener that drops UTMs hides the campaign.
Is Direct traffic the same as dark social?
No. Direct also includes bookmarks, some in-app browsers, and omitted referrers. Use it as a clue, not as a dark-social total.
Can I track shares on Instagram DMs?
Not reliably as inbound referrers. Use a unique landing URL in the bio or story sticker for campaigns you need to measure.
Does dark social matter for SEO?
Indirectly. Shares can create visits and brand searches. They are not a substitute for indexable pages. Measurement belongs in analytics, not in keyword tools.
