Direct answer
Write one unique meta description per URL that summarises the page in plain language, names the offer or location when it is true, and ends with a reason to click. Aim for a complete sentence around 140–160 characters, but judge the live snippet in Search, not a character counter. Google often rewrites tags; the description still matters because it is the default you control.

What a meta description actually does
Reviewed 17 September 2026 by Dsignr Digital, a Rosebank (Gauteng) web design and digital marketing agency founded in 2015 by Sphamandla. We sell websites, ecommerce, branding, SEO, social, email and care plans. These articles describe that work — not an affiliate playbook.
Last updated: September 2026. A meta description is HTML on your page. It is not a ranking factor in the way titles and useful content are. It is the sentence Google may show under your title in Search. People use it to decide whether to click.
Google’s documentation on controlling snippets is the source to follow. Google may use your tag, a sentence from the page, or a mix. You still write a good description because a blank or duplicated tag leaves the snippet to chance.
This is part of ordinary search engine optimisation, not a separate trick.
Length: write a complete sentence, then check the snippet
There is no official character limit that guarantees a full snippet. Display width changes by device. A practical drafting range is 140–160 characters for English, stopping at a full stop rather than mid-word.
After publishing, search for the exact title in a private window and look at the live result. If Google is using a weaker sentence from the body, that sentence on the page needs to be clearer — or the description is not matching the page.
Four descriptions that fail (with local examples)
Google’s own “bad” patterns still hold. Here they are with South African service-page examples instead of bakery copy:
- Keyword list: “web design Johannesburg, website design Rosebank, SEO company Gauteng”.
- Same tag on every page: “Dsignr Digital is a web design agency in Rosebank. Contact us today.” on services, work and news.
- Does not summarise this page: a privacy-policy paragraph used on a pricing guide.
- Too short or empty: “Web design.” or no tag at all.
Each URL needs its own sentence because each URL should answer a different query.
A worksheet you can reuse
For every important page, write:
- who the page is for;
- what the page uniquely explains or offers;
- one specific proof or constraint (location, platform, timeline) that is true;
- the next step (quote, call, download) if it fits without hype.
Draft: “[Who] can use this page to [outcome]. It covers [specifics]. [Next step].” Then cut filler. Example for a service page: “Johannesburg service businesses can see how Dsignr Digital structures a custom website project, from discovery to handover. Request a scoped quote.”
Keep claims you can defend. Do not promise “#1 on Google”.
When Google rewrites your description
Rewrites are normal when the query is more specific than your tag, or when a sentence on the page is a closer match. That is not a failure of the CMS. Improve the matching heading and first paragraph so the page and the tag agree.
If every page shows the homepage slogan in Search, you still have duplicate descriptions. Fix the templates first. Then write unique tags for money pages: home, services, location-relevant service URLs, and guides such as website cost in South Africa.
Put descriptions on a real site architecture
A perfect tag cannot save a thin page. Pair this work with crawlable service pages and a site you own — see why you need a real website in 2026. If you want the tags written as part of a rebuild, request a quote from Dsignr Digital.
How we apply this at Dsignr Digital
When we launch or rebuild a site in Craft or WordPress, unique seoTitle and seoDescription fields are part of the handover, not an optional extra. Service pages, the homepage and money articles each get their own sentence. We check the live snippet after Google recrawls; if Search is quoting a weaker body line, we fix that heading first.
We do not write keyword lists into the tag. Rosebank and Johannesburg appear only where the visible page also says we work there. See SEO and selected work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are meta descriptions a Google ranking factor?
Google does not treat them as a ranking factor like relevant content or links. They influence the snippet people see, which can change click-through. Write them for humans scanning results.
How long should a meta description be in 2026?
Draft a complete sentence around 140–160 characters, then check the live Search snippet on mobile and desktop. There is no official length that always displays in full.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Yes for pages you want found: services, location pages, product or category templates, and articles. Boilerplate on every URL wastes the snippet.
Why is Google not using my meta description?
It often prefers a sentence that closer matches the query. Align the page heading, first paragraph and tag, and make sure the tag is unique and accurate.
Do I need keywords in the meta description?
Use the words a customer would recognise if they are true on the page. Stuffing synonyms looks like a keyword list and is one of the patterns Google advises against.
Can AI write meta descriptions for me?
It can draft. A person still has to check facts, uniqueness and tone. Generated tags that repeat the same sentence across 40 pages are worse than writing ten important ones by hand.
Where do I edit meta descriptions in WordPress or Craft?
In the SEO fields for that entry or page, not in the visible body. If the field is empty, Search will guess from the page text.
Should the homepage description mention Rosebank or Johannesburg?
Yes if you serve those areas and the homepage says so. Do not add suburbs you cannot defend. Match the visible contact details.
