Track a short stack: Core Web Vitals from real users (LCP, INP, CLS), qualified traffic sources, conversion rate on the primary action, and whether key pages stay indexed. Lab PageSpeed scores are diagnostic, not the goal. Pick metrics from your business objective — ranking, enquiries or sales — instead of monitoring everything.

Choose metrics from the job the site has
Reviewed 17 September 2026 by Dsignr Digital, a Rosebank (Gauteng) web design and digital marketing agency founded in 2015 by Sphamandla. We sell websites, ecommerce, branding, SEO, social, email and care plans. These articles describe that work — not an affiliate playbook.
Last updated: September 2026. An earlier version of this article promised 19 metrics and never listed them. That is not a scorecard. A useful set is small enough that someone reviews it monthly.
Most South African marketing sites have one of three jobs: rank and get found, collect enquiries, or sell. The metrics below map to those jobs. For how to run the lab test, use the PageSpeed Insights guide. For targets, see page-load statistics.
Experience: Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals are the shared language for page experience:
- LCP — when the main heading or hero appears. Good is under about 2.5 seconds.
- INP — how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Good is under 200 milliseconds. Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay.
- CLS — whether the layout jumps. Good is under 0.1.
Prefer the field (real-user) panel in PageSpeed Insights over a single office-Wi-Fi Lighthouse run. Test a mid-range Android phone on 4G.
Acquisition: how people find you
- Organic landing pages — which URLs Search actually sends, in Search Console.
- Branded vs non-branded queries — whether you only appear when people already know the name.
- Google Business Profile actions — calls, direction requests, website clicks, if local demand matters.
- Paid vs organic split — so Ads and SEO are not argued from the same vanity session count. See SEO vs Google Ads in South Africa.
Conversion: the action the business needs
- Primary conversion rate — quote form, booked call, purchase, not “all button clicks”.
- Click-to-call on mobile — often the real conversion for local services.
- Form completion vs form start — a long form that nobody finishes is a UX metric, not an Ads problem.
- Ecommerce: add-to-cart and checkout start — if those drop, read ecommerce design practices before buying more traffic.
Define a qualified lead in writing. A newsletter signup is not a project enquiry.
Content and index health
- Indexed pages vs submitted sitemap in Search Console.
- 404s and failed forms after deployments — part of website maintenance.
- Helpful page updates — dates and facts that still match the offer.

How we apply this at Dsignr Digital
The scorecard we actually keep for a client is short: field LCP/INP/CLS on the converting URL, Search Console landing pages, and one qualified action (quote form, booked call, or purchase). A paediatric practice, an accountant and a shoe store do not share the same primary conversion — we write that down before GA4 events are built.
Monthly care plans are where those numbers get reviewed after plugin and campaign changes, which is when tracking usually breaks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What website performance metrics should I track in 2026?
Start with real-user Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), qualified conversions, and Search Console landing pages. Add local GBP actions if you rely on Maps. Do not track a vanity list nobody reviews.
Is PageSpeed score the most important metric?
No. It is a diagnostic. Field Core Web Vitals and conversion rate matter more than a 100/100 lab screenshot on desktop Wi-Fi.
What replaced First Input Delay?
Interaction to Next Paint (INP). Use INP when you read a 2026 PageSpeed or CrUX report.
How often should I review these metrics?
Monthly for most marketing sites, and after every campaign pixel, theme or plugin change. Speed and tracking break quietly.
Which metric matters most for SEO?
Useful indexed content and a page experience that does not bounce people. Vitals support that; they do not replace it.
Which metric matters most for an enquiry-led business?
Qualified form or call conversions, with source. Sessions without a defined action waste the report.
Do I need heatmaps and session recordings?
They help diagnose a known problem. They are extra weight on LCP. Turn them on with a question, not by default.
Can Dsignr Digital set this reporting up?
Yes. Typical work is Search Console, GA4 events for forms and calls, and a short monthly dashboard tied to the site’s actual job.
Who writes Dsignr Digital’s articles?
They are written and reviewed by Dsignr Digital in Rosebank, Johannesburg — the same practice that designs, builds and looks after client websites. We date updates, cite primary sources, and do not publish invented client percentages.
