Direct answer
Run PageSpeed Insights on the live URL, read the real-user (field) Core Web Vitals first, then use lab diagnostics to find the cause. In 2026 the interactivity metric is INP (under 200ms is good), not FID. Prioritise mobile. A 100/100 desktop screenshot on office Wi-Fi is not a pass.

What PageSpeed Insights measures
Reviewed 17 September 2026 by Dsignr Digital, a Rosebank (Gauteng) web design and digital marketing agency founded in 2015 by Sphamandla. We sell websites, ecommerce, branding, SEO, social, email and care plans. These articles describe that work — not an affiliate playbook.
Last updated: September 2026. PageSpeed Insights combines Chrome User Experience Report field data (when available) with a Lighthouse lab run. Google documents the flow on Chrome’s speed documentation.
This guide replaces an earlier draft that still taught First Input Delay. INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital. Use INP in every 2026 conversation.
How to run a useful test
- Open pagespeed.web.dev.
- Paste the exact URL shoppers use (HTTPS, www or not — pick the canonical).
- Read Discover what your real users are experiencing before the lab score.
- Repeat for a product or service URL, not only the homepage.
- Compare mobile first. Desktop is optional context.
If field data is missing, the URL may be too new or too low-traffic. Lab data still helps; it is not a substitute for CrUX.
LCP, INP and CLS
Thresholds from Google’s Core Web Vitals:
- LCP — good under ~2.5s. Usually the hero image or H1. Compress, size, and preload that asset; do not ship a 3MB PNG.
- INP — good under 200ms. Heavy JavaScript, third-party tags and long tasks delay taps. Chat widgets and tag managers are frequent causes.
- CLS — good under 0.1. Set width and height on images and ads so the page does not jump.
More context: page-load statistics and which metrics to track.
Fixes that usually move the needle
- Replace oversized heroes with correctly sized WebP/AVIF and explicit dimensions.
- Defer non-critical JS; load chat and heatmaps after consent or on interaction where you can.
- Minify and split CSS; avoid importing an entire icon font for one arrow.
- Use a CDN for static assets if it has an edge that helps South African visitors — after you compress.
- Upgrade PHP and remove abandoned WordPress plugins. See maintenance.
Dsignr Digital does this as part of launches and care plans. Request a performance pass.
How we apply this at Dsignr Digital
On Dsignr launches we test the canonical HTTPS URL on mobile first, then fix hero weight, third-party tags and PHP/plugin bloat before we argue about a desktop 100. That work sits in build QA and in website care plans after marketing pixels arrive.
We will not screenshot a lab 100 from the office fibre and call the site fast. Field INP and LCP on a mid-range Android are the conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Google PageSpeed Insights?
A free Google tool that shows real-user Core Web Vitals when available, plus a lab Lighthouse run with diagnostics for a specific URL.
Is FID still a Core Web Vital?
No. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced First Input Delay. Ignore guides that still treat FID as current.
Should I aim for 100/100?
No. Aim for good field LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, and conversions that hold. Perfect lab scores on desktop Wi-Fi are vanity.
Why is mobile worse than desktop?
CPU, network and the weight of images and scripts. Google’s field data is dominated by phones. Optimise there first.
Does PageSpeed affect SEO?
Page experience is part of how Google evaluates sites. Slow pages also convert fewer users. Speed supports SEO; it does not replace content.
What is the difference between field and lab data?
Field data is from real Chrome users (CrUX). Lab data is a simulated test. Prioritise field data when both exist.
Will a CDN fix my score?
It can help static files. It will not fix uncompressed heroes or blocking scripts.
How often should I retest?
After launch, after adding tags or chat, after landing-page campaigns, and in monthly maintenance.
